Martial Art Schools and Instruction
Martial arts benefit the practitioner in improving self defense capability, enhancing mental and physical fitness, developing overall self confidence, and in various other ways. Starting out on a martial arts training program can change a person?s life. In order to derive the full benefits from such a program it is important to select the right school and instructions at the outset.
Goals First thing you should do is to be clear about what you want to achieve by starting a martial arts training program. Depending on the goals a relevant martial art school can be selected. In setting goals you should be realistic as to your physical abilities and the time and money you are willing to devote to martial arts.
If your aim is self defense you should look for martial arts that focus on self defense like Hapkido, Aikido, Karate, and various other traditional and non traditional fighting systems. Most martial art schools offer special courses catering to self defense, some especially aimed toward women.
If your aim is to improve your physical fitness, most martial arts can be of help given that almost all involve a rigorous program of physical training. In this regard modern martial arts and ones oriented towards sports can be of the greater benefit since they were generally created with physical fitness in mind. Tae Kwon Do, Judo, and other grappling technique oriented martial arts are good examples.
If you intend to engage in competitive sparring and sports competitions you should choose a martial art schools that is affiliated with the relevant authorities of that sport who are responsible for holding competitions and tournaments whether it be Judo, Tae Kwon Do, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, or Mixed martial arts (MMA), among others. The degree and intensity of competition and physical rigor expected from the fighter depend on the particular martial art being practiced.
Some martial art sports involve performing Kata or prearranged sequence of movements to show mastery of techniques instead of sparring. These include Karate, Wushu and many others.
If you are interested in Cultural and artistic aspects of martial arts, you should choose a more traditional art. They will have complex, sophisticated, and refined forms, training methods, and rituals. Some of these arts include Shaolin Kung Fu, Shotokan Karate, Kuk Sool Won, among others
Selection Once you are clear about what you want to achieve, physically check the available options in your area. Most schools will allow observers to watch others training and may even give a free lesson. Do not forget to check out classes held at various youth clubs, churches, and other such places.
In evaluating a school the most important thing is to check is the ability of the instructor, as a martial art performer and as a teacher. Technical competence, the time he devotes to individual class members, the formal qualifications, are few of the things you should inquire into before choosing. Generally is better to choose the school based on the instructors than on the martial art style.
In addition talk to current and previous students. Get the opinion of others trained in martial arts. Check the prices and fees, class schedules etc. Make sure that there are no ?hidden? charges.
Other factors to evaluate include, whether classes are held in a formal manner or informally, the quality and rank of the students, the school?s culture; whether it is a friendly place or more competition oriented place, and the social structure of the school.
It is only after you have carefully considered all those factors that you should make a decision based on how you feel about the instructor, the school, the other factors, and the amount of time and money you are willing to devote to martial arts.
Once you have selected a school that meets your requirements persist with the first few lessons at least, do not abandon just because the very first lesson was not to your liking.
